    Housing Experiences of Conditional Refugees: “We Rented This Place Even Though It Was Ruinous and Lousy Because We Had to”

    The aim of the study is to understand where and under what conditions conditional refugees in Ankara are housed and to evaluate the processes of finding a house and the relations they establish with their neighbours from their perspective. For this purpose, in-depth interviews are conducted with a total of 32 people, including 15 conditional refugees living in Ankara and 17 professionals working in non-governmental organisations providing services to them, and the data obtained are subjected to inductive thematic analysis. The analyses reveal three themes: ‘Problems faced by conditional refugees due to the inadequacy of existing policies and services’, ‘The process of finding a house and establishing relations with neighbours’ and ‘The characteristics of the houses where conditional refugees live’. As a result of the study, it is understood that conditional refugees generally face serious housing problems, and this has a significant impact on their quality of life. The lack of adequate support to conditional refugees in terms of accommodation leads to a further deterioration of their conditions. Therefore, there is a clear need to strengthen efforts in this area and policy makers should take action to develop a housing policy and improve right to housing.
