Methods: We performed a comprehensive search of Turkish and English keywords across a range of databases, including PUBMED, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, SCOPUS, Ovid, EBSCOhost, Yoktez, DergiPark, and TR Index, to identify studies on the subject published between January 1, 2001-2024. The search procedure yielded 11 studies to be recruited for meta-analysis. We analyzed the data using the trial version of Comprehensive MetaAnalysis Software (CMA). The degree of heterogeneity was quantified using Higgins I2 tests, while we assessed publication bias through Kendall's Tau and Egger's regression analyses. Results: This meta-analysis focuses exclusively on the effects of forced air warming and irrigation fluid warming, as only these methods provided sufficient data to calculate effect size. Our findings demonstrated that while forced air warming significantly affected preoperative (g = 0.279), intraoperative (15th minute, T4) (g = 0.845), postoperative (g = 0.647) body temperature and postoperative shivering (g = -2.279), irrigation fluid warming had a significant impact on postoperative body temperature (g = 1.007) and intraoperative shivering (g = 0.188). Conclusion: Overall, our results indicated that forced air warming and irrigation fluid warming can serve as a preventive measure against hypothermia and shivering among transurethral resection patients. Given that other forms of warming could not be included in this research, further studies are recommended to explore scholarly evidence on the efficacy of these methods.Öğe Examination of Postgraduate Thesis on the Effect of Massage Applied in the Postoperative Period on Pain(Cem TIRINK, 2023) Bozkul, Gamze; Karakul, AtiyeThis study, it was aimed to examine the quality and quantity of postgraduate theses on the effect of massage applied in the postoperative period on pain. The literature search was conducted on 5-10 March 2022 in the National Thesis Center database of the Council of Higher Education without any year limitation. The keywords "surgery", "massage" and "pain" were used while scanning. Theses that met the inclusion criteria were included in the study. The theses reached were evaluated according to their titles, and the theses that were not related to the subject were removed. In the search, 18 theses were reached. The five theses reached were excluded from the study because they were not related to the subject. Of the remaining 13 studies, two were excluded because they were specializations in medicine, one was physiotherapy and rehabilitation, and one was family medicine. Since the full text of one of the theses could not be reached, it was excluded from the study. Eight theses from the master's and doctoral theses in the field of nursing, which are suitable for the inclusion criteria, were examined in order to make the selection. Three of the theses were master's theses, and the remaining five studies were carried out as doctoral theses. The time of publication of theses varies between 2009-2019. When the types of these are examined, three studies are quasi-experimental, four studies are randomized controlled studies, and one study is a study with a pretest-posttest control group study. The research group of one of the theses consists of pediatric patients. Various types of massage were compared in the studies evaluated. It has been seen that hand massage and foot massage are mostly used. It has been concluded that hand massage or foot massage applied in the postoperative period is effective to reduce pain. In line with these results, it is recommended to use massage, which is one of the nonpharmacological methods, in pediatric and adult patients to reduce pain in the postoperative period.Öğe Experiences, difficulties and coping methods of female nurses caring for breast cancer surgery patients: A qualitative study(Elsevier Sci Ltd, 2024) Sagdic, Busra Cirak; Bozkul, Gamze; Karahan, SabriAim: The present study aims to qualitatively explore the experiences, problems, and coping methods of nurses caring for mastectomy patients. Methods: The study employs an exploratory-descriptive design with the participation of 14 nurses serving in a surgical oncology clinic. We gathered the data through semi-structured, face-to-face interviews and analyzed the transcriptions of audio recordings using the thematic analysis method. We then extracted relevant codes and subthemes to achieve the main themes. The main themes are presented in three relevant contexts. Results: Participating nurses' experiences are addressed through the themes of 'emotional difficulties,' 'physical difficulties,' and 'positive awareness.' In addition, their coping methods are considered within the themes of 'coping methods' and 'motivation.' The final context is identified as needs, where the themes of 'organizational needs' and 'psychosocial needs' are explored. Our findings highlighted that although participating nurses usually confront physical and emotional challenges, they exert much effort to develop both positive awareness and engage in behavioral changes. Interestingly, we observed that participants remain ineffective in dealing with and have difficulties employing relevant solutions for professional issues. Conclusion: Overall, even though participating nurses need to deal with the burden of physical and emotional challenges when caring for patients, their coping strategies with these difficulties often remain insufficient. Thus, our humble recommendation may lie in satisfying the organizational and psychosocial needs of surgical nurses to promote their coping skills when fulfilling their demanding tasks with mastectomy patients.Öğe Health literacy of university students: A mixed method study(Elsevier Science Inc, 2024) Turhan, Mahmut; Bozkul, GamzePurpose: The aim of this study was to determine the health literacy levels of university students and to examine their views and perceptions on this concept. Method: The research was conducted as a mixed methods research between December 2022 and May 2024. Data were collected using the Personal Information Form, Turkey Health Literacy Scale-32 and Semi-Structured Interview Form. Quantitative data collection phase of the study was conducted with 315 students and qualitative data collection phase was conducted with 9 students with inadequate and excellent health literacy levels. Results: The average age of the participating university students was 20.37 +/- 2.996. Their health literacy levels were: inadequate 7.3 %, problematic/limited 29.8 %, adequate 39.7 %, and excellent 23.2 %. Students with excellent health literacy are hindered by 'information pollution' but benefit from 'desire to research,' 'easy access to resources,' 'role models,' and 'curiosity.' Those with inadequate health literacy are adversely affected by 'information pollution,' 'inadequate awareness,' 'rising costs,' and 'high criticism skills,' while 'desire to research,' 'role models,' and 'consciousness' positively impact their literacy. Students believe improving health literacy involves 'scientific activities,' 'preventing information pollution,' 'creating awareness,' 'being researchers,' and 'fostering curiosity'. Conclusion: There are many factors that positively and negatively affect the level of health literacy in university students. It is recommended to make institutional and policy-level arrangements to increase the level of knowledge, awareness and motivation regarding health literacy. Practice implications: The health literacy levels of university students, who will constitute the future generations of the country, need to be improved. To improve health literacy, nurses can recommend that university students increase their awareness. (c) 2024 Elsevier Inc. Various risk factors related to the patient and the surgical process pave the way for this situation. Unplanned perioperative hypothermia occurs in approximately 70% of patients. Unplanned perioperative hypothermia leads to various complications such as surgical site infections, blood loss, increased transfusion requirements, prolonged wound healing, chills, and cardiac problems for patients. It is associated with adverse patient outcomes, prolonged hospital stay and increased costs. Active or passive heating methods are used to prevent this situation. During the surgical process, nurses play a key role in the care and follow-up of patients. Nurses' awareness of unplanned perioperative hypothermia should be increased, their education should be maintained, and the guidelines developed should be integrated into clinical practice skills. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses and the American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses have prepared guidelines for health professionals with evidence-based practices for this topic. It is necessary to make plans in order to disseminate interventions for the prevention of hypothermia in surgical nurses and to reflect evidence-based guide recommendations into practice.
