    Knowledge Situation of Expectant Mothers About Fetus Rights

    Objective: The present study was carried out toinvestigate the knowledge situation of expectantmothers about fetus rights.Methods: This is a descriptive study. The sampleof the research consisted of 264 pregnant womenwho applied to the Birth and Children DiseasesHospital in a city in Central Anatolia, betweenOctober 7th and December 30th in 2009. In thisstudy, a questionnaire form of 28 questions whichwas prepared by the researchers based on concerned literature was used. Numbers, percentages, arithmetic means were used for the dataanalysis.Results: Of the expectant mothers participatingin the study, 40.9% belonged to 20-24 years agegroup, 36.3% were high school graduate, 81.8%were housewives. Of the expectant mothers,12.1% had undergone abortion previously, and56.1% thought that “pregnancies until week 10could be terminated if wanted and under the presence of necessary conditions. Of the expectantmothers, 65.1% accepted that “every fetus hadthe right to be born alive”, whereas 63.6% thought that “it was ethical to terminate a pregnancybetween weeks 10 and 22 if the fetus had an anomaly with no chance to survive?Conclusion: It was found out that expectant mothers did not have sufficient knowledge about fetus rights.
